Before you can draft new changes, you will need to go to Designer and select “Enter Draft Mode”.
You can then draft any modifications to your project, but the changes will not be live automatically, so you won’t see changes to your records yet.
To finalize your changes, please follow the steps below.
- Review your drafted changes
- Submit your changes
- Discuss changes with the REDCap Support team (if necessary)
Review your drafted changes
If you return to Designer after entering draft mode, you will see that the text in the yellow box has been replaced with new information. Before submitting your changes, you should first view your changes and any possible impacts to your data with the “View detailed summary of drafted changes” link.
It is best practice to review this page while making modifications and immediately before submitting your changes to make sure that all drafted changes are anticipated and approved by any relevant team members. You should not submit changes if you are not sure who drafted them or why they were drafted.
Red text or buttons on this page indicates significant and potentially harmful changes identified by the system.
In particular, you should review the "Details regarding all changes made in Draft Mode" section.
The system will summarize the total number of critical issues identified in your drafted changes. Then, the remaining list will break those critical issues into 3 subsections.

Submit your changes
From your summary page, you can determine whether your drafted changes will be made automatically upon submission.
If your changes do not have any critical issues, these will typically be automatically approved. You can look for the green "Yes" message next to the "Will these changes be automatically approved?" item.
If your changes could lead to critical issues, your changes will be reviewed by the REDCap Support team after you submit them. You can look for the red "No, an admin will have to review these changes" message next to the "Will these changes be automatically approved?" item.
When you are confident with your changes, you can return to Designer and select the "Submit Changes for Review" button.
If you submit changes that will not impact any data in your project, then the changes will be made automatically.
If you submit changes that may impact data in your project, submitting this request will automatically create a ticket on your behalf in our ticketing system, which you will be notified of via your primary email on your REDCap profile. The subject line will contain "[REDCap] Review & Approve Project Changes". If you do not seem to receive it, please review the following article: I haven't heard back about my ticket, what should I do?
We will review your changes and go over any possible impact to your data with you so that you can decide how you would like to proceed.
Our response time is up to ~1 business day, excluding holidays and weekends.
Discuss changes with the REDCap Support team
This step will only apply to changes that you submit that are not made automatically. After we receive your auto-generated ticket, our team will review the changes that you submitted and reply with a summary of how those changes might impact your project. This is a great time to ask any questions you have to clarify how your drafted changes will impact your project.
Our team cannot select specific changes to commit and others to reject. We are only able to commit all or reject/remove all changes. We will ask you to select an option from the list below.
- COMMIT CHANGES - Commit all the drafted changes listed above.
- Reject Changes - Keep the drafted changes made thus far, but place it back in Draft Mode for users to make more changes.
- Remove All Drafted Changes - Erase all the drafted changes made, and revert back to before Draft Mode was enabled.
We will notify you when this action is completed, and you will receive an automated notification with one of the following subject lines:
- "[REDCap] Project changes were Approved"
- "[REDCap] Project changes were Rejected"
- "[REDCap] Project changes were REMOVED"
