Mosio is a messaging service specifically tailored for REDCap users, allowing for automated survey invites, alerts, and survey invitations via SMS/text messaging. Mosio is available for project teams through a monthly subscription model. For more information about the subscription plans and how to get an account, please read Getting a Mosio Account.
Keywords are single word phrases that will trigger some sort of automated action from Mosio, resulting in a message to the participant. All Mosio projects, regardless of plan level, will allow your participants to use three keywords. "Basic" or higher plans with Mosio will allow the creation of custom SMS surveys, which can also use custom keywords.

Basic Keywords
All projects will utilize 3 keywords by default. These are:
- Start
- Stop
- Help
"Stop" and "Help" are both required by mobile carriers and will automatically be configured to send default messages to your participants. These will NOT be case sensitive. If any of these phrases are sent to your Mosio number, an automated message will send to the participant.
Keyword - Start
By default, texting "Start" will trigger the following message:
"Success!
1. Reply to this text w/ your question or msg
2. Save this number in ur phone as [projectname] to text us later
Reply stop to quit"
This will also automatically add a participant to your project's "Contacts" page if you have a basic plan.
Keyword - Stop
By default, texting "Stop" will trigger the following message:
"You have opted out of [projectname] questions & answers and will receive no further messages. More info: www.mosio.com/support or 877-572-9953"
If a participant texts "STOP" to your Mosio number, they will no longer receive communications from your Mosio project, even if there are messages scheduled to send.
If a participant then texts "Start" to this number, messages will begin sending again without issue. Alternatively, this can be modified in the participant's profile. To do this, click the small button next to the "stop" text within the participant's profile
This will trigger a pop-up/confirmation window, where you will need to select "OK" to process this request.
It's important to note that this should not be done with the consent of the participant.
Keyword - Help
By default, texting "Help" will trigger the following message:
"Q&A from: [projectname]
Reply STOP to quit.
Pwrd by Mosio.
Support: mosio.com/support or info@mosioproject.com
Msg&Data rates may apply."
Providing participants with this keyword in one of your initial SMS messages will allow them to navigate to this menu/be reminded of the "STOP" keyword at any time. Mention of the "STOP" keyword in the "HELP" message is necessary to remain in compliance with mobile messaging regulations.
Customizing Responses
For those with Basic plans (or higher), customizing this message further may be preferred to ensure the participant is able to get in touch with your team directly.
To customize these messages, select the "Tools" dropdown menu from your Mosio project dashboard.
From the "Tools" dropdown, click the "Project Settings" option.
On the new page, scroll down until you see the "Advanced Options: (click heading to expand)" section.
Clicking on the "Text For Instructions" text will generate a new short text field. You may type in a response for your "START" message here.
Similarly, clicking "Help Keyword" will generate a new short text field, where you may update the "Help" message participants receive.
Clicking "Stop Keyword" will generate the same interface, where you are able to update the "Stop" message response.
Once you are satisfied with the updates to any of these messages, press the green "Save" button.
Keep in mind, a response to the "Help" and "Stop" keywords is required.
Custom Keywords
For those with the Basic plan or higher, you will be able to trigger SMS message surveys using Keywords. This can be a great way to provide participants more information, or allow them trigger a self-paced survey. To configure a custom keyword, you will want to start from your Mosio project dashboard.
From the project dashboard, you may either click on the name of an existing survey to add a keyword in the "Surveys" tile or click "Create new survey" to create a new survey with a keyword.
If you create a new survey, you will be prompted to name the survey, and then click the blue "CREATE SURVEY" button.
After you have created the survey or clicked on the name of an existing survey, you will be brought to the survey editor. On the survey editor page, you may click the "[Show]" text that appears to the right of the text "Keywords".
Now, you will be given a textbox where a keyword can be entered. Type in your preferred keyword, then click the green "Add Keyword" button.
You are able to tell the keyword is saved once it appears in a gray bubble.
Multiple keywords may be added by following the same steps.
To remove a keyword, click on the small "x" to the left of said keyword.
